Steven Soderbergh’s 2009 indie The Girlfriend Experience is being adapted into a 13-episode serial for Starz. Soderbergh is staying on as executive producer while indie filmmakers Lodge Kerrigan and Amy Seimetz while write and direct. Female directors are like unicorns, so that Soderbergh has recruited two means Soderbergh has been to far off lands and fought many dragons.
Seriously though, let us rejoice that women will helm a series focused on modern sexuality. If it was run by dudes it would be a talk-heavy drama that inserts random talk about the economy. Speaking of, that’s the movie. I remember the summer after high school, I wasn’t cool enough to have real friends so I stayed at home watching Netflix. The Girlfriend Experience was one of the first flicks I watched and I remembered it being… interesting? I had/have something of an affinity to Sasha Grey, but her on-screen presence was never alluring. She always seemed kind of aloof in the film and that made me as a viewer detached. Then there was all that heavy-handed stuff about Obama and the economy. I guess she was supposed to be kind of dead inside which may have been the point? It’s been awhile. Sorry.
While on the subject, Sasha Grey is (so far) not signed on, so if you want anything new from her you can follow her on Instagram or something.
